Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
The story in today’s Gospel is a reminder that the power of God awaits the cooperation of people. The gospel says: “He could work no miracle there, so much did their lack of faith distress him.” Notice, it does not say he would not; it says, “He could not.” The power of God awaits the cooperation of people. Let us not be as foolish as those in today’s story who could not accept Jesus because he was one of them. The tragedy of life is not death, but in what dies inside us while we are living – the death of genuine feeling, the death of acceptance of others, the death of openness to the gifts of others who can help us, the death of love.
