“On one occasion a lawyer stood up to pose Jesus this problem: Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life? Jesus answered him: What is written in the law? How do you read it? He replied: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said: You have answered correctly. Do this and you shall live.” Luke 10:25-28
Today’s scripture takes us back to our starting point in recovery. One can easily imagine the Lord asking the active alcoholic, “Do you want to live?” The desperate alcoholic, at his/her breaking point, will cry out YES. Then do what I tell you, says the Lord Jesus. What is that, the alcoholic says. The Lord says: Desire sobriety with all of your heart and soul, with all of your being. Surrender all of this desire to me and give up trying to cure your alcoholism yourself. You have had enough of attempting different methods of drinking and it always turns out a failure. Now, if you are sincere and ready, abandon yourself finally and totally to me, The Lord says. Having done so you will, believe me, enjoy a new way of life and living.
The necessary result of this confession and petition is a new interest and immersion into life – focusing on others, my brothers and sisters, and less focus on self.
Try it. You will be amazed at the outcome!
Prayer: Lord Jesus, grant me only Your love and Your grace today in my recovery. With these gifts I am rich enough, beyond all earthly riches, and I desire nothing more.
