Matthew 1:18-24

For it is through the Holy Spirit that this child has been conceived

Every one of us experiences situations that cause tension, disappointment, hurt, and estrangement. It might be helpful if we take on the considerate temperament of Joseph to put aside our own hurts and anger and be the person who will humbly and joyfully be a source of reconciliation and welcome to all we encounter today. St. Joseph help us to be open and accepting as you were.

The fourth candle (purple) represents love. It symbolizes the boundless love of God, which we are called to share with one another.

Saturday of the Third Week of Advent, December 20, 2025

Luke 1:26-38

Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God.

We do Mary a disservice if we follow the tendency to place her on a pedestal and leave her there. We reflect on Mary’s importance today precisely because she is one of us, one who shows us how to be in the right relationship with the Father. As Pope Paul VI said, “Mary is truly our sister, who as a poor and humble woman fully shared our lot.”

Friday of the Third Week of Advent, December 19, 2025

Luke 1:5–25

Gabriel announces the birth of John the Baptist.

An angel appears to Zechariah to announce that his prayer has been answered and you will have a son and name him John. When was the last time an angel appeared to announce something to you? Angels play an important part in our salvation history and throughout our lives.

Creator God thanks for the gift of angels that have been a part of our salvation history. May we continue on the journey that we are with you. Grant us the wisdom to know that we need the gifts you freely give us each day of our lives.
