They Rise Again to Follow Christ: Addiction, Recovery and the Paschal Mystery

The Twelve Steps are often understood as a spiritual path — and addiction, as a spiritual affliction. It’s no surprise, then, that priests and religious who struggle with addiction may experience deep feelings of unworthiness and a painful sense of being a fraud. For us, recovery is more than a return to mental and emotional stability; it is a profound encounter with the redemptive mystery at the heart of our Christian faith. The hope offered by recovery is nothing less than the hope of resurrection. This retreat invites participants to reflect on how the Paschal Mystery unfolds within our own brokenness, healing, and newfound freedom.

Retreat Leader

Steve Spahn, SJ, is a priest of the USA East Province of the Society of Jesus. A native of Denver, Colorado and the youngest of 10 children, he has worked in parish, retreat and educational ministries for over 30 years. He presently serves as an Assistant Teaching Professor of Theology and the Associate Director of the Office of Mission Integration at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. Fr. Steve is a proud and grateful Guest House alumnus.
