At the Annunciation the angel tells Mary she is blessed and loved and will bring God’s Son into the world. Mary understood none of this – and didn’t have to. It is all God’s doing. All God needs is her acceptance of and cooperation with it all. Mary gives this in her first words in the Gospel: “Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Let it happen to me as you say.” In her life and ours what always comes first is God’s action, God’s wish to draw close to us, not our action, our desire to be closer to him.
