Imagine the humiliating act for a Synagogue Official to fall at the feet of a carpenter from Nazareth. He is not seeking advice from Jesus; he wants Jesus to come and touch his daughter – lay His hands on her. He puts aside his position as an official, and all prejudices are forgotten.
Humility personified. Think of all the energy we spend in fear – fear of one another, fear of authority, fear of the unknown – we so easily succumb to intimidation tactics used on us. Jesus ignores them all and goes straight to the girl. He does not listen to public opinion.
This passage says so much about Jesus: His love, His peacefulness, His concern for others, His approachability, His totally disarming presence – He was non-threatening.
