Guest House at St. John Vianney

Two of the premier programs in the treatment of men and women in religious life have joined forces. Under the Guest House Program at St. John Vianney, men and women in religious life who suffer from co-occurring addictive and psychiatric disorders will be able to receive treatment at the same time and in the same place.

Previously those with dual disorders would be treated at Guest House for their addiction and then at St. John Vianney Center for their psychiatric issues.

Both programs stress the spiritual nature of recovery.  Guest House incorporates the Twelve Steps of Recovery into the treatment program.  St. John Vianney uses psychiatric treatment.  In their joint venture, they can now provide an integrated milieu addressing those with co-occurring disorders.

St. John Vianney Center is a treatment and education center, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, offering spiritually based, holistic, professional care for religious and clergy who are invited to come together in a pastoral environment.  The integration of spirituality and behavioral health disciplines, facilitates healing and growth for those who journey to wellness.

In the spirit of St. John Vianney, this ministry is responsive to the changing needs of the Church and weaves a fabric of tradition and vision into a shared journey of healing.

Treating Dual Disorders

The goal of anyone entering treatment is to achieve a healthy and productive life.

And the goal is the same for someone suffering simultaneously from addiction and from a psychiatric disorder.

Experience has shown the treatment of those suffering from dual disorders requires collaborative thinking and treatment.  Treating a person for addiction at one facility and later treating the same person for clearly identifiable psychiatric issues at another facility is neither efficient nor productive.

This became apparent during an informal collaboration between Guest House and St. John Vianney which took place over a period of five years. Both institutions are nationally recognized leaders in their fields. For more than fifty years, Guest House has treated those with addictions using the framework of the Twelve Steps of Recovery.

St. John Vianney Center is a treatment and education center, sponsored by the Archdiocese of Philadelphia.  Since its inception in 1946, the Center has offered spiritually based, holistic, professional care for religious and clergy who have treatable psychiatric disorders.  The program integrates spirituality and behavioral health disciplines to facilitate healing and growth.

Together, Guest House and St. John Vianney have inaugurated an integrated program, Guest House at St. John Vianney, in order to treat addictive disorders and psychiatric disorders simultaneously and in the same facility.

The goal of returning clergy and men and women religious who suffer from dual disorders is more readily achievable if the psychiatric and addictive disorders can be treated in the same facility and at the same time.

Guest House at St. John Vianney will provide more efficient and more practical treatment to those with dual disorders at less cost than treating them successively at two different facilities.
