January 18-21, 2018
DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa
Fort Myers Beach, Florida

Retreat Speaker Avis Clendenen joins Celebrating Recovery for the second time with “Hearts Broken and Mending: A Recovery Retreat.” She was part of ICAP 36 years ago when she began her journey in sobriety and recovery. Currently, Avis is professor emerita of religious studies at Saint Xavier University in Chicago where she continues to serve half time as special assistant to the President. She taught in the area of the integration of depth psychology with theology and spirituality with an emphasis on living a spirituality-in-depth today. She designs and facilitates recovery retreats and retreats for those growing older, and she gives days of reflection on a variety of topics. She is the coauthor or author of five books, including Forgiveness: Finding Freedom through Reconciliation and Experiencing Hildegard: Jungian Perspectives. Avis is a long-time Mercy Associate with the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas/West Midwest Community.

“Hearts Broken and Mending: A Recovery Retreat” explores the rich metaphor of the human heart, broken and mending, as key to the process of entering the mystery and richness of recovery from addiction. The ancient ever new wisdom of biblical texts and parables, along with personal memoir, will be shared as recovery stories holding the promises of heart-healing, which gradually unfold as we work our programs in solitude and in solidarity with each other. Each presentation is offered visually with poetry and music. These holy days will intimate the depth of spirituality our hearts know is possible.
