Feast of St. Thomas Becket
Luke 2:22-35

In today’s Gospel the moment of consolation comes, and the last chapter of Simeon’s life becomes the first chapter of the new story of God’s consolation for the people of Israel. Simeon is at peace. Curiously, though, God’s consolation is not only for Israel as Simeon expected.

As we come to the end of one year and prepare for the new, the year 2017 looks and feels like Simeon in his old age. We can entrust the past to God so that something new can begin for us all.

The peace that radiates through this Gospel is God’s own light and life. The child that Simeon holds is the God who holds all our lives in His hand. This God, now born for us, is our peace, too.
