Luke 9:43-45

The most important phrase in today’s Gospel reading is “pay close attention.” He admonishes His disciples to listen. Even though they do not comprehend what He says, He wants them to listen. And so with all of us. We hear Jesus say: “I am with you always” – but it isn’t until the lonely moments that we might have in a time of illness or the loss of someone dear to us – in those moments the words of Jesus take on meaning.

Lord Jesus, open my eyes that I might see; open by ears and my heart, that I might hear.
